ScriptureWe heard the story of Jesus’ baptism last Sunday and learned that was why we are baptized because we want to follow in Jesus’ footsteps. We are trying to model our lives after Jesus. We learned how challenging it is to follow Jesus’ example by modeling some of the things in the church building with Play Doh. Modelling Jesus’ life is extremely challenging and takes lots of practice and support from our community. This builds on the lesson from the first Sunday School session on baptism when we learned that baptism is the sign that we are on Jesus’ team.
This week, we will study what the promises of baptism mean in our lives and that Jesus told his disciples that one of their primary tasks was to go baptize people (any and all people) as followers of Christ. Go out and make disciples in all the nations. Ceremonially wash them through baptism in the name of the triune God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Then disciple them. Form them in the practices and postures that I have taught you, and show them how to follow the commands I have laid down for you. And I will be with you, day after day, to the end of the age. (Matthew 28.19-20) Here are the five promises that we make in baptism: Will you continue in the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in the prayers? Will you persevere in resisting evil, and, whenever you fall into sin, repent and return to the Lord? Will you proclaim by word and example the Good News of God in Christ? Will you seek and serve Christ in all persons, loving your neighbor as yourself? Will you strive for justice and peace among all people, and respect the dignity of every human being? |
DiscussionAt Home: Talk to your child about why living into the promises of baptism are important to you and why you are passing on these important characteristics to them. Baptism is the mark of being on the Christian team, modelling Jesus’ life, and trying our best to make the world a better place.
